Mandatory criminal background checks are required every year for every staff and board member at the Boys & Girls Club of Farmington. In addition, criminal background checks are required for any volunteer who has direct, repetitive interaction with children.

Ongoing training and supervision of staff are critical. We participate in a wide variety of child safety training including Child Abuse Awareness, Grooming, Mandated Reporter, CPR/First Aid, and Emergency Procedure Trainings.

Boys & Girls Clubs of San Juan County has a dedicated safety committee to provide input and guidance on local policies and safety strategies. Priorities and initiatives include but not limited to safety drills, policy updates, and inspections. The safety committee meets quarterly.

Boys & Girls clubs of San Juan County continually updates robust safety policies, programs, and training for our staff and volunteers that are designed to promote child safety and protect young people from threats that are present in our society. We implement layers of safety policies and guidelines to keep our kids safe.

Staff and volunteers at the Club are all mandated reporters. We are required to report any critical incident/safety concern to local authorities immediately, including suspicion of abuse.

We are also required to report any critical incident to Boys & Girls Clubs of America within 24 hours. These include:

• Major medical/mental health emergency

• Abducted or missing child

• Child abuse by an adult staff/volunteer

• Child abuse by another child

• Felony criminal act related to the Club

• Misappropriation of funds, $25,000 +

• Criminal or civil action reported to insurer

• Negative media affecting reputation

• Other incident Club deems critical

Yearly self-safety assessments are performed for each site and every two years, each site undergoes an external safety assessment.
